My Life As...

Hey, happy Thursday!

If you guys are anything like me, then you are highly interested in what people do with their lives every day and love learning different kinds of careers. Well, I’ve been subscribed to the Newsette for a few months now and they have this interesting section called What She Does. This section features #BossBabes who talk about their careers and what an average day looks like for them!

For today’s post, you’ll learn about what I do and I used some of the Newsette questions to better explain what I do!

Industry: Communications
Experience: 10 months
Pay: $10/hr

What is your title and what does it mean?
I am a Public relations intern with THR33FOLD which is a communications agency in the beautiful Coral Gables area. This means I get to learn from the PR strategist/director how to pitch to media outlets, draft media lists, draft press releases and do a lot of research on different clients! Not only that, but I find articles or any kind of publicity featuring our clients and compile them into a press kit.

What is your morning routine?
I tend to lay out my clothes the night before so I have enough time in the morning to get up, make coffee, and head out the door. One thing I do every morning, that might seem kind of silly, is Google map my route to the office so I can see the fastest way to get there. Because I find the quickest route, I tend to get to work earlier (Around 9:30/9:45am) and I’ll go with my favorite co-worker (that's you @Checa) and grab some Starbucks bagel bites right around the corner from the office! After finishing my breakfast and chatting away, I’ll settle in my desk and make my to-do list for the day as I read through my emails.

At 11am I am…
Usually, I am running back and forth between my desk and my boss’s office to make sure I have clear instructions on any pending assignments for the day. If I’m not running around like a crazy person, I am at my desk, plugged into Spotify and working on pitch drafts or finishing research on different media outlets for clients.

What does lunch look like for you?
NEVER at my desk! I need time away from the office to recharge my thoughts and this means grabbing my gal-pal, or meeting Jp, and having lunch poolside in the rooftop of my office. Sometimes I bring leftovers, sometimes it’s a half caesar salad with dressing on the side from Panera, or if I’m feeling fancy, sushi with thai doughnuts!

At 3pm I am…
Coming back from a late lunch and more research!

When does the workday end for you?
The office is supposed to close at 6pm but we are always on a deadline. Around 5:30, I’ll start wrapping up whatever I’m currently working on, tidying up my desk area, and visit my boss with any updates on assignments or any ideas I might have regarding a pitch. After going over these updates, he usually wishes me well and sends me home!

Is there anything about your job you’d like others to know?
Like any other job, it is a lot of repetitive work and sometimes it can be frustrating researching a lot of the same thing and not finding exactly what you’re looking for. I do work remotely, now, because of school, and a lot of it is the same work (research, lists, etc) even though it does lack communication from time to time. However, it does show you different ways to get creative, how to find that connection between you and someone you are pitching, and definitely enhances your writing skills!

If you’d like to know more about my transition working remotely then let me know in the comments below. I hope you all got a little sense of what it’s like to be a PR intern, don’t forget to check out the Newsette for other career insights!
